Raymond Carroll is the author of ‘Only Raising Dust On The Road’ – a serialised novel set in Thailand. A Scotsman, born in East Kilbride, Glasgow in 1970, he is married to Sunan – a Thai national, and has two Thai/Scottish children: a girl (16), and a boy (12). He currently resides in Scotland but previously lived and worked in Thailand for two years between 2002 and 2004.
In his younger years, Raymond lived and worked in Canada, California, Egypt, London (UK), the Channel Islands, Ireland and Taiwan. Back then he had no trade or specialized skills that helped him to travel and live and work abroad, but he was energetic and enthusiastic and was willing to give anything a try. As a result, Raymond has worked in a vast array of markets and industries throughout the world, ranging from sales jobs to construction to online entrepreneur and writing projects. Over the years, Raymond’s priorities have changed since having children, and he doesn’t travel as much as he would like to, but travel and writing are still two of his greatest passions.
Raymond’s time in Thailand changed his life forever and his novel is loosely based on how that change came about.
‘Only Raising Dust On The Road’ has been serialised into 4 novella length books.
Part 1 – Buckfast, Lager & Fags is available to purchase on Kindle format & Paperback at Amazon
Stuck in a monotonous cycle of scraping by on the dole, Micky – a nomad by nature, is positively purpose, ambition, dream and drive free. He is merely drifting, like a feather with no control over the thermals that whisk it hither and thither. During the day he whittles away whatever cash he has in the bookies, before moving on to spend his evenings with the motley-crew of cut-throats and backstabbers who he reluctantly looks upon as friends. Every day is the same – a perpetual drag, only to be endured under a drink and drug-induced haze.
Enter Slim – his boyhood buddy, resident in Israel. Slim has a proposition for Micky – would he (Micky) like to manage a bar on a tropical island in Thailand?
Micky has a question for Slim: ‘…is the Pope a Catholic?’
With renewed gusto, Micky heads for Thailand, inspired – an opportunity for change on the horizon. But he’s corrupted by Bangkok the minute he sets foot on the tarmac at the airport – the supercharged, Asian atmosphere neutralising his good intentions on impact. Can he really transcend his disposition and re-establish a connection with the world? Here’s hoping …because Thailand is a dangerous place to be out of control.
The story is told from a multiple character ‘first person’ point of view and takes place in the late 1990’s.
‘Only Raising Dust On The Road’ is a work of fiction – inspired by, and based loosely on, actual events.
